The Figure in Context

Chelsea Lehmann
Friday 12 - Sunday 14 January 2018
9.30am - 4.30pm each day

This three-day masterclass led by Chelsea Lehmann is centered on painting the figure from life in an elaborate still-life context. Two models will pose amongst objects of various size, shape and colour.

Participants will develop several studies emphasising composition, cropping and the spatial attributes of the set-up. Beginning with an underpainting in Burnt Sienna acrylic paint, the painting will be developed using oil or acrylic paint with individual direction from the lecturer.

Over the course of the masterclass some objects will be removed while the models stay in position. Conceptually, we will focus on the idea of ‘presence and absence’: in practical terms this will involve processes of addition and removal, rigorous editing, and the exploration of a broad range of painting techniques. The course will be introduced with a brief lecture.
