Lecture Room, Level 2, Teaching & Studio Building
Adelaide Central School of Art

Adelaide Central School of Art is delighted to offer a very special Artspeak event featuring esteemed artist Richard Lewer. This opportunity to hear Lewer speak on his varied practice and about his upcoming exhibition at Hugo Michell Gallery is available exclusively to Adelaide Central School of Art students and graduates and our wider community.

Based in Melbourne, Richard Lewer exhibits regularly in Australia and New Zealand. Lewer’s practice encompasses painting, drawing, animation, video and performance. Drawing inspiration from life’s tragedies and dramas, the artist’s research processes involve listening to police scanners and ruminating on religion, sport and the darker moments in Australian history. His paintings and detailed drawings often channel the psychic reverberations that extreme events leave on places and objects. In addition, his iconic text pieces rework overheard conversation and candidly expose an undercurrent of troubled self-reflection. Lewer’s performance practice draws on his love of sport, discipline and training, incorporating boxing, wood-chopping and table tennis.

Lewer has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, and his work is included in many important state museums and university collections in both Australia and New Zealand. Lewer won the 5th Basil Sellers Art Prize in 2016, the City of Albany Art Prize in 2015, The Blake Prize in 2014 and the Black Swan Portraiture Award in 2013. He has also exhibited at Art Stage Jakarta (2016) and Art Basel Hong Kong (2016).

Richard Lewer is represented by Hugo Michell Gallery, Adelaide;Sullivan + Strumpf, Sydney; and Suite Gallery, Wellington.
