2016 Ed Tweddell Residency Announced

We congratulate Andrea Malone, 2015 BVA graduate

The School is pleased to announce that Andrea Malone is the recipient of the 2016 Ed Tweddell Residency at Central Studios, Adelaide. Andrea graduated from the School in 2015 with a Bachelor of Visual Art.

Andrea is excited to develop her project, Before and After, in the spacious Grote Street studio, and is thrilled to be working in the company of professional artists that she holds in high regard. She mentions in particular, Central Studios artist Chris Orchard, describing him as a ‘guiding light’ throughout her final year studies.

Before and After has a timely historical reference, with 2016 marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Six Vietnam Veterans will sit for Andrea in the studio space.

“They are representative of the 60,000 men who went to Vietnam,” she explains.  “I will combine my drawings and paintings of them with digital manipulations of their pre-war photos. I want to create a video for projection in community spaces that explores the changes wrought upon them by their experiences.”

The Residency honours the late Dr Ed Tweddell, a generous supporter of contemporary visual arts practice who was particularly interested in the career development of South Australian artists. The recipient is offered 6 months free rent at Central Studios in Grote Street, Adelaide, to generate or complete a specific project.

Previous recipients of the Ed Tweddell Residency include Adelaide Central School of Art lecturers Lucy Turnbull and Sue Kneebone, and graduates Katia Carletti (2011), Sheila Whittam (2008) and Cathy Frawley (2009).

Andrea will begin the Residency on 20 February 2016.
