2016 praxis ARTSPACE Residency Announced

Congratulations Jonathan George, 2015 BVA graduate

Adelaide Central School of Art is pleased to announce that 2015 Bachelor of Visual Art (Hons) graduate Jonathan George is the recipient of the inaugural praxis ARTSPACE Residency. Supported by the Helpmann Academy, the nine-month residency is in partnership with the new artist-run initiative, praxis ARTSPACE. Directed by Patty Chehade, praxis ARTSPACE is located in the Bowden cultural precinct.

George, 29, of Goodwood, who works predominantly in sculpture and installation, is delighted at the opportunity. His practice, informed by relationships and interactions with the built environment, made him the perfect candidate to respond to the residential and commercial developments in the area. Preoccupied with a language found in architectural models, George explores spatial possibilities by distorting and manipulating sheet materials into geometric forms.

“I’m very excited to be named as the recipient of the residency. I’m looking forward to being a part of the praxis ARTSPACE community and having the opportunity to develop my studio practice in an inspiring professional environment,” said George. “My current work has been informed by the relationships we have with the built environment. praxis ARTSPACE is located in Bowden, which is currently undergoing a period of architectural transition, so I’m excited about the possibility of this influencing the work I develop during the residency.”

Residencies are integral to artists’ development as they offer time and space away from their usual environment. They encourage reflection, research and production of new work within a different community and space, and can facilitate rich and meaningful cultural exchange and collaborations for individuals and organisations.
